*** Kindness with the Clangers week *** Mrs Stevens, Rita and Sammy took a group of children to Longcliffe Nursing home to visit our elderly friends. Mrs Stevens describes the morning: "A group went to Longcliffe nursing home for the morning, noticing many of the signs of autumn along the way. We found leaves of many different colours, including orange, red and purple. We saw some roses at various stages of development, including finding rose hips. We also found some fungus growing at the base of the tree had a discussion about how we mustn't eat things we find in case they are not good for us. On arrival we sang our new autumn song to the residents and gave them our present of biscuits, which had been made in Kingfishers the previous day as part of our "Kindness with the Clangers" work. A small group went for a walk around the home, giving biscuits to the residents who were unable to join us in the main lounge area. We then coloured in some autumn pictures in mixed generational groups, with much discussion about how we are all different. Many of the children noticed that some of the residents had special chairs or tables and that some needed help with their colouring. After a drink and a biscuit we joined in the their bean bag and hoopla games - throwing small hoops onto cones, beanbags into baskets and seeing if we could walk the length of the room while balancing beanbags on our heads. We finished with a joint sing-song with residents and children all suggesting songs and rhymes we all knew. The children were very well behaved and many of the residents complimented them and thanked us for visiting. A number of the children became more familiar with the residents as the morning progressed and said goodbye with hugs and handshakes."
